Mother accused of ‘stabbing her daughter, 14, to death’ is granted bail ‘to grieve’

A mother accused of murdering her teenage daughter was today granted bail to “grieve the death” of her child.

Scarlett Vickers, 14, was allegedly stabbed to death in the family home in Geneva Road, Darlington on Friday.

Her parents Simon Vickers, 48, and Sarah Hall, 44, have both been charged with her murder.

Hall appeared at Teesside Crown Court via a video link from HMP Low Newton and an application was made for her to be given bail.

Paul Rooney, the barrister appearing for Hall, told the court: “She is a woman of good character and has had no involvement with the criminal justice system or involvement with social services.

‘We submit this defendant should be bailed in order for her to grieve the death of her daughter, surrounded by family and friends.

“For her to remain in custody, may be considered to be cruel and unjust, and I urge compassion for a mum who has lost her daughter and is struggling.”

There was no application for bail for Vickers, who will remain in custody at HMP Durham.

Mr Justice Jacobs granted the application with certain conditions, including that she stay with a family member and abide by a curfew.

No application was made on behalf of Vickers.

A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for August 5 at the same court, with a trial date provisionally set for January 14.

Scarlett’s school, Haughton Academy in Darlington, said: “She was always immaculately turned out, respectful and polite.

“A very friendly girl with a great sense of humour, she was popular with her friends and will be greatly missed by everyone at school.

“Staff and pupils at Haughton Academy and the Education Village Academy Trust are extremely saddened by the news and we would like to pass on our thoughts to everyone affected by this tragedy.

“The trust is working hard to support pupils and staff through this very difficult time.”
