Motorcyclists can soon get RI charity shark license plates. Here’s how.

Sharks will soon ride motorcycles in Rhode Island.

Production will start on the motorcycle version of the Atlantic Shark Institute’s charity license shark plates and should be available before summer, according to Jon Dodd, executive director of the Atlantic Shark Insitute in Wakefield.

“As soon as we released the passenger version, we started getting calls from motorcycle owners asking if we’d be able to produce one for them,” Dodd said in a press release.

In Rhode Island, groups need to reach a minimum of 600 orders for each type of charity plate before the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles will have them produced. The Atlantic Shark Institute has already reached the minimum for passenger plates, as well as commercial and combination plates, and those are already on cars and trucks.

The plates cost $42.50 for a set, with $20 of the price going to the Atlantic Shark Institute.

The plates, which feature the endangered mako shark, are the fastest-selling and most popular charity plates in Rhode Island, according to Dodd.

The Atlantic Shark Institue will wait about a week to send its first order to the DMV, giving more potential customers a chance to order the plates, Dodd said. They should be available for pickup in May. The institute will hold a distribution party as it has with the release of other plates.

“It’s always a celebration when we get to meet our supporters and see how excited they are to get their new plates,” Dodd said.
