Names released of man killed by Hoke deputies Friday morning

RAEFORD — Hoke County deputies shot and killed a man early Friday in Raeford during the service of a search warrant, officials said Friday afternoon.

Larry Ray Scott, 66, died in the shooting that happened about 6 a.m. in the 100 block of Hickory Drive, an unpaved road of some 16 parcels off Pittman Grove Church Road.

According to a news release from the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, armed with a search warrant, announced themselves and were entering the residence when they were met by two armed men.

One of the men “followed commands” to drop his weapon while the other did not and shots were fired, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The release said medical services attempted to render aid, but the man, whose name was not immediately released, died at the scene.

Two deputies were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a State Bureau of Investigation probe requested by Sheriff Roderick Virgil, said Capt. S. Blakely, chief of detectives.

“Our immediate concerns are to support and respect the family and friends of the deceased, cooperate fully with the SBI, and provide our deputies with the services necessary to cope with this traumatic incident,” Virgil said in the release.

The reason for the search was not released.

“As this investigation is active and ongoing, few details will be released to the public at this time. More information will be provided when possible,” the statement said.
