Anthony Edwards has drawn yet another fine from the NBA, this time for flipping off an official.
The NBA announced on Monday that it had fined Edwards $50,000 for the gesture during Saturday’s 127-125 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. While on the sideline, Edwards flipped off an official during an inbounds play.
After lowering his arm, he went in for another before his teammate Joe Ingles encouraged him to sit down.
The fine by the NBA is Edwards’ fifth of the season for various offenses across 38 Timberwolves games. His fine tally now stands at $285,000.
Edwards previously drew a $100,000 fine on Dec. 29 for using “profane language” during a postgame interview.
“I gotta go get it, s***,” Edwards said on a live TV interview after hitting a game-winner in a 113-112 win over the Rockets. “Nickeil [Alexander-Walker] found me. He cut me off. I’m like, s***, I’m going for the win. Like Gilbert Arenas said, ‘I don’t do overtime.’ So f*** it.”
He also drew a $25,000 fine from the NBA for language that he used in a postgame interview following a win over the Warriors.
Naz [Reid] and Julius [Randle] are f***ing playing defense,” Edwards told reporters on Dec. 6. “I’ve never seen them play defense before. So that’s f***ing incredible. And he’s right here, put the camera on him. Guarding his ass off.”
On Dec. 21, Edwards drew a $75,000 fine for calling officials “f***ing terrible” following a loss to the Warriors.
And it all started with another flip of the bird in November. In that instance, a Kings fan in Sacramento was on the receiving end of his ire. That incident cost Edwards $35,000.
And that’s just this season. The fifth-year veteran has drawn multiple fines in previous seasons throughout his career. But he’s stepping up to a new level in 2024-25.
Helping his financial cause is a five-year, $244.6 million extension to his rookie contract that’s due to pay him $42.2 million this season. Edwards clearly finds value in using some of that money to express himself however he likes.
