New developments in Kern’s most recent murder-suicide

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET)—It’s now the home marked with tragedy on the 2900 block of Hosking Avenue, where two people were found shot to death Saturday, Dec. 28.

The Kern County Coroner identified the deceased as 62-year-old Juanita Gutierrez and 54-year-old Carlos Rafael Cardenas.

Bakersfield police say Guiterrez was shot several times, and Cardenas suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities don’t know when it happened. Investigators have not released the possible relationship between the two as the death investigation continues.

If you know something, say something and call the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111.

But, that’s not the whole story. Five days after the shooting, the same home caught fire.

The Bakersfield Fire Department smothered the small fire inside the residence. No one was inside the home and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Now, Guiterrez and Cardenas are part of some sad crime statistics: Guiterrez’s death marks the 72nd homicide in Kern in 2024.

It’s also the fourth murder-suicide in the county for 2024. The first was a man and a woman found dead in a home on the 1400 block of Langston Street in South Bakersfield in July. Six months later, there’s still no coroner identification.

Two days later on Oct. 29, two men were found dead in a home on Cresson Court in South Bakersfield. They were veterans, and they were brothers. There’s still no coroner identification.
