Forecasters have warned that a 280-mile band of snow will hit large parts of the north of England and Scotland on New Year’s Day.
The Met Office has published a new weather map, which shows a huge band of snow arriving in the UK around noon on January 1. With temperatures hovering around 4c in Greater Manchester, up to 5cm of snow could fall by midnight in the worst affected areas.
The area of snow on the Met Office map stretches 280 miles from near Kilbirnie in Scotland to Chesterfield in South Yorkshire.

New Year’s Eve revellers have also been warned to get wrapped up as we brace for -2C temperatures. Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “Not a lot changes through the rest of this week and indeed this weekend, but as we move towards the New Year, we could see a change to cooler conditions and wetter conditions more widely.
“There could be some heavy rain at times and there is an increasing chance of some snow – but it’s too early to say where that snow is going to fall.”
The Met Office meteorologists forecast the north of England and Midlands will hover at around 4C. Meanwhile a yellow weather warning across the Pennines is in force for Monday and Tuesday, with more warning likely to be issued closer to the time.
Tony Wisson, Met Office deputy chief meteorologist., said: “Later in the week, wintry showers are likely to be a feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established.”
