NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham is once again demanding action from lawmakers to do more to fight crime in the state. This time, she’s running ads, hoping it will get the public to also put pressure on them.

The governor posted an ad on her X page Thursday a little more than two weeks until the 60-day session begins. She said that laws need to change and urged people to call their lawmakers and tell them to tackle crime.

“We want to make sure that those voices are heard and that the constituency’s concerns and the real-life struggles that they’re enduring are brought to the forefront so that these very important problems can be addressed,” said Benjamin Baker, Public Safety Policy Advisor.
This is not the first video. The governor’s frustration keeps growing, especially after a special session this summer where lawmakers ignored her pleas for action, and didn’t pass any of her eight bills that would have addressed a list of problems, including criminal competency standards and mental health treatment.
“We didn’t get an outcome that we thought was favorable from that, but we are not in any way quitting on the prospect of bringing an improved resolution to New Mexico residents,” said Baker.
The governor said she’ll try to pass crime-fighting bills again. Republicans said they’re on board, and pointed out it is the democrats that keep killing these bills. “Certainly, we’re willing to work with her and anybody else that wants to get a handle on this crime problem. It’s a huge problem,” said Senate Minority Bill Sharer in a statement tonight.

House Democrats sent this statement in response to the governor’s video:
In the upcoming session, Democratic lawmakers will continue working to make New Mexico a safer place to live and raise your family, with meaningful policies to reduce crime now, while also addressing its root causes. Improving public safety will require all of us, across all levels of government and all communities in our state, to keep coming together with a focus on developing solutions. We encourage New Mexicans to make your voices heard and participate in the legislative process. The Roundhouse belongs to you.
Camille Ward, Spokeswoman for New Mexico House Democrats
Some senate democrats called out the governor’s bills after the special session saying they didn’t think they were necessary or right for New Mexico.
Senator Joseph Cervantes told KRQE News 13 at the time the bills were complicated and lawmakers didn’t want to rush them and do more harm.
