NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ The Red Lobster across from New Towne Mall is one of nine of the chain’s restaurants in Ohio that will be closing amid bankruptcy.

Last month, Red Lobster said in a news release it has voluntary filed for relief under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code in Florida District courts.

The restaurant, 255 Graff Road SE, was built in 1991 and remodeled in 2012, according to records from the Tuscarawas County Auditor’s Office. The building has an appraised value of $1.1 million.

The company pays $28,974 per year in real estate tax, Auditor Larry Lindberg said.

“State Sen. Al Landis is rallying local government and business leadership to write letters of support to try to persuade Red Lobster to keep the New Philadelphia restaurant open,” said New Philadelphia Mayor Joel Day.

“The restaurant is one of the most popular in Tuscarawas County. We will do all we can to reverse the decision to close our Red Lobster.”

“This restructuring is the best path forward for Red Lobster,” said company CEO Jonathan Tibus. “It allows us to address several financial and operational challenges and emerge stronger and re-focused on our growth. The support we’ve received from our lenders and vendors will help ensure that we can complete the sale process quickly and efficiently while remaining focused on our employees and guests.”
