Tennessee is expected to get some frigid weather in the new year.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a pattern change is expected to bring an arctic outbreak with high probabilities of below-normal temperatures for much of the eastern part of the country.
There is a small cell in the South that is particularly affected, and the Volunteer State is in it. Tennessee has a 90-100% chance of seeing below normal temperatures between Tuesday, Jan. 7, and Monday, Jan. 13.

“The coldest air of the season to date and dangerous wind chills are likely across many areas of the Southeast,” states the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.
In the middle of the arctic air outbreak, temperatures may fall far below the historical average. In Tennessee, the average temperature in January ranges between about 50 degrees during the day to about 25 degrees at night.
Frozen precipitation is possible across the Southeast with the potential for heavy snow extending northward to include much of Appalachia.
When will temperatures start to drop in Tennessee? Will it snow?
Ahead of the arctic blast arriving next week, temperatures will begin falling across Tennessee this week with a few changes of snow in parts of the state.

“There is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding this event but, yes, there is at least a chance for an accumulating snowfall,” Nashville’s weather service office wrote on X Tuesday.
East Tennessee has a slight chance of snow on Friday, according to the National Weather Service office in Morristown. There is a second chance for snow showers on Sunday and Monday. In Knoxville, Friday will have a high of 41 degrees and a low of 21 degrees with a 20% chance for snow showers in the early morning.
Memphis’ National Weather Service office forecast temperatures dipping below 30 degrees on Friday evening. There is no snow predicted for the area as of now. The weather service said it is unsure of additional impacts but it is sure of bitter cold temperatures starting next week.
In Nashville, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in the evenings starting as soon as New Year’s Day. There is a possibility for rain mixed with snow showers on Sunday and Monday. Low temperatures will fall into the low 20s Friday evening, with high temperatures sticking around the low 40s through Sunday.
Temperatures are about to take a nosedive. The big story is an active weather system potentially affecting Middle Tennessee Sunday into early Monday.
