  Report: Caleb Williams’ team asked for no-franchise tag clause before agreeing to rookie deal

  “One thing I’m told is there was an effort made to get the Bears to agree not to use the franchise tag on Caleb Williams after he would finish the fifth year of his contract, assuming they would pick up the option,” ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio told 670 The Score, via NBC Sports Chicago. “But that did not go anywhere.”

  Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy, the former Texas wide receiver who broke the combine record in the 40-yard dash, missed most of spring practice with a hamstring injury but won’t start training camp on the PUP list, per NFL reporter James Palmer.

  It’s unusual for a player as good as Aiyuk to be available, if he will actually be available. If Aiyuk moves, it’s a rare season-shifting move in mid-to-late July.

  Brandon Aiyuk has grown into a great WR with 49ers

  Brandon Aiyuk, 26, has been with the Niners his entire career. They drafted him with the 25th overall pick in 2020, and he’s produced for them. He has 269 receptions for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns for San Francisco over his four-year career. Aiyuk has managed to find a way to materially improve his game every single season, but he took a huge jump forward when Brock Purdy ascended to the starting quarterback position in 2022.

  In Aiyuk’s first two seasons with the Niners, which were Purdy-free, he tallied 118 receptions for 1,574 yards and 10 touchdowns. But in his two most recent seasons, in which Aiyuk had Purdy slinging passes his way, he tallied 153 receptions for 2,357 yards and 15 touchdowns.

  Today, rookies for the Chicago Bears will report to camp, a group that includes No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze, the ninth overall pick and one of the best receiver prospects this class.

  Elsewhere, rookies for the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers will report as well.
