New kicking rules reminder
Source: The NFL sent a memo to all 32 teams last Thursday as a warning/reminder that as kickers tinker with new kicking techniques, they cannot place the ball flat on the kicking tee, as the Patriots and most teams practiced this spring.
This has been NFL’s summer of paying big money for QBs with incomplete grades
Quarterback contracts are going to be discussed every year as players sign new deals and resolve contract disputes with their teams. This summer saw a slew of quarterbacks sign market-rate extensions, but where this year differed from previous years, to a degree, is that a few of these quarterbacks that signed deals largely have incomplete résumés.

Ja’Marr Chase again at Bengals practice, and again not practicing
Hello from training camp stop 4: the Cincinnati Bengals. WR Ja’Marr Chase is here in his No. 1 jersey and a baseball cap, helping with drills but not practicing on final day before pads.
Ja’Marr Chase has been ‘engaged, aware and positive’ per Bengals head coach
Zac Taylor says Ja’Marr Chase has been engaged, aware and positive.
“If anybody has a healthy relationship with the quarterback and they’re always talking, it’s Joe (Burrow) and Ja’Marr and Tee (Higgins),” Taylor said.
Still, he adds, there are always new routes and concepts that could use work.
Latest on Ja’Marr Chase, from Bengals camp
As the Bengals await wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s return to practice, head coach Zac Taylor says his brother is “killing me for my plan, he wants to know my plan.”
No clear answer from Taylor on whether Ja’Marr will practice tomorrow on pads Day 1. Just that they have a plan.
Hold-in continues for now.

Report: Colts DE Samson Ebukam out for season with torn Achilles
Tough blow for the eighth-year defender, and the Colts’ defense.
Report: Texans DE Denico Autry suspended 6 games
Autry reportedly violated the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
Big loss for the Texans in what’s shaping up to be a promising season.
#Texans DE Denico Autry is being suspended 6 games for violating NFL policy against performance enhancing drugs.
He has released a statement saying, “It was important to me that the NFL know that I did not intentionally or even knowingly ingest a banned substance.“

Lions re-sign OT Taylor Decker
Lions and left tackle Taylor Decker have agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $60 million, including $31.83 million in guarantees according to his agency @SportsAmdg. A big offseason of taking care of their own in Detroit continues.
“The fact that the 49ers could practically run it back with the same roster after a Super Bowl appearance is rare. They were able to do that because Purdy’s contract is still one of Mr. Irrelevant. His cap hit this season is a little more than $1 million. That will change soon, assuming the 49ers extend him. For now, it keeps the 49ers’ window wide open.”
The 49ers have been heartbreakingly close to a Super Bowl over the past 5 seasons without winning it all. They were the first team ever to lead in overtime of a Super Bowl and not win it. The good news is just about the entire roster returns to try again. https://t.co/bVAJmQmDP6
1. Hard to believe we’re still nitpicking Justin Herbert’s leadership style. But I think as he grows into a veteran role and learns from Harbaugh, that will end.
3. Wideout Quentin Johnston seems to be coming out of whatever the 2023 issues were.
4. Fantasy outlook: I buy that the #Chargers are working hard to establish a sustained run balance. I think in the short-term — if they’re successful — it will curb some of Herbert’s numbers. pic.twitter.com/8nh5yTnFt7
5. I can’t get over the (kinda) ghost train that runs by the practice fields constantly. I fully buy that it will eventually fuel some paranoia.
6. #Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is working to achieve scheme complexity…but also role simplicity. Very tricky work. pic.twitter.com/qXjgkrwuWP
7. Of all the analogies of #Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, it’s the “gliding to 30,000 feet” that matters most. This franchise can be retooled correctly and sustainably with Harbaugh and GM Joe Hortiz…if everyone has a little patience. Column: https://t.co/tD41MpK4Vm
Anthony Richardson + Jonathan Taylor = Colts fans excited
Christian Barmore would be huge loss for Patriots defense
Patriots DT Christian Barmore recently signed a four-year extension with the team worth up to $84 million. He also turned 25 on Sunday.
Barmore had a breakout third season in 2023 after the Patriots drafted him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The former Alabama player appeared in all 17 games and had 65 tackles with 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. The extension he signed with the team included over $40 million in guaranteed money.
Cowboys DE Sam Williams reportedly feared to have torn ACL
Patriots’ Christian Barmore diagnosed with blood clots
There’s currently no timetable for the fourth-year DT’s return. It’d be a big loss for a Patriots defense that’s expected to be the strength of the team.

Chiefs’ Chris Jones sits out of Sunday practice with groin strain
Kansas City Chiefs star defensive lineman Chris Jones sat out of practice Sunday, dealing with a groin injury that isn’t believed to be serious, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
#Chiefs coach Andy Reid says Pro Bowl DL Chris Jones, who missed practice today, is dealing with a groin strain.

Caleb Williams shows why Bears drafted him No. 1 overall
LAKE FOREST, Ill. — July practices are the time to learn each other’s tendencies and trying new things.
But as Caleb Williams found wide receiver Tyler Scott for yet another deep touchdown in training camp, members of the coaching staff thought to themselves: Look at his ability to extend the play. Look at his grasp of the field.
“He had that natural feeling, that natural spatial awareness [that], ‘Hey, there’s a void that shouldn’t have been there based on what the coverage structure might have played out as, but it played out a little different,” offensive coordinator Shane Waldron said. “He’s starting to feel the tight-window throws that are a part of the NFL.
It’s just camp, and it’s just against air, but this could absolutely be one of the NFL’s top QB-WR duos this season
Reminder: Bears have TWO top-10 rookies to be excited about
WR Rome Odunze is turning heads in camp so far as well, which is great news for Caleb Williams.

Revisiting Cowboys camp
1. Dak Prescott had a little moment of public negotiation. Pretty subtle, but that’s Dak.
2. Rookie first rounder Tyler Guyton isn’t a fixture with the first team OL yet. But he will be eventually. Or has to be, so long as he can keep Dak safe. pic.twitter.com/rF9HO6AvGN
3. Trey Lance looks like…well, does it really matter yet? He’s going to get some work in preseason games and that will say far more than anything right now.
5. I can’t remember the last time I was at a camp-opening presser for Dallas and there wasn’t a surreal moment in the Jerry Jones experience. Thursday was no different.
6. Cowboys are going to try like hell to get 2023 first round pick Mazi Smith on track. There’s a ways to go. pic.twitter.com/9RjVpeSGwW
Jerry Jones said sometimes he can’t afford what he wants. Dak Prescott said he doesn’t fear potentially leaving. And the Dallas #Cowboys 2024 season will remain focused through that dynamic until some kind of resolution develops. Camp column: https://t.co/uMePEszqW9
The initial numbers for Tua Tagovailoa put him at $53.1 million per year, which makes him the third-highest paid QB in the NFL in annual value, behind Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence (both at $55M/year).
The 5th-year QB led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards last season along with a career-high 29 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. He’d been a limited participant in training camp practices thus far, but that will surely change now that he has a fresh contract secured.
The #Dolphins and their QB Tua Tagovailoa have a deal!
Sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo they’ve agreed to terms on 4-year, $212.4M contract extension to lock him in long-term. At long-last, Miami’s franchise QB is paid like it. 💰 💰 💰 pic.twitter.com/rW5sTJzBQo
QB Lamar Jackson remains sidelined with an illness and will not practice today. He continues to undergo further evaluation and receive care from our medical team.
For the fourth time in five camp practices, QB Lamar Jackson isn’t practicing because of an illness. Per team, Jackson “continues to undergo further evaluation and receive care from our medical team.”
