Northern California placed under flood watch ahead of atmospheric river

(FOX40.COM) — Much of Northern California has been placed under a flood watch as an atmospheric river prepares to make landfall across the northern state.

Starting at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, the Sacramento Valley from central Sutter County to northern Shasta County and the entire north coast from Marin County to the Oregon border are under the flood watch.

The National Weather Service is expecting these areas to be hit by three to six inches between Tuesday and 4 a.m. on Saturday. The foothills of the Coastal Range may see up to eight inches of rain.

Residents in these areas may see a rapid rise in streams, creeks and rivers as well as ponding along roadways and low-lying areas.

Sacramento has opened respite centers from Nov. 19 to 25 due to the rain.

The Outreach and Engagement Center at 3615 Auburn Blvd. will operate from 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 to 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. The center can house up to 50 people and has space for pets and personal belongings.

The North 5th Street Navigation Center at 700 North Fifth St. will be open daily from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and can house up to 20 people, but they cannot bring their pets.

The city also said that libraries nad community centers will be available for people to get away from the rain during their regular operating hours. Rides with SacRT to and from the centers will be free by showing the flyer.
