Officials: Former Detroit police officer charged in fatal accident in Roseville

A former Detroit police officer is charged in a fatal accident in Macomb County last year in which a motorcyclist died.

Corey Siquan Jones, 28, was arraigned Friday in 39th District Court in Roseville on a charge of moving violation causing death, a one-year misdemeanor. He was released on a $5,000 personal bond, according to a release Monday from the county prosecutor’s office and online district court records.

Jones, while off-duty, was accused of driving through a red light Aug. 16 and was struck by a motorcyclist who was traveling lawfully through the green light at the Interstate 94 service drive and 12 Mile Road in Roseville, according to the release and Dawn Fraylick, communications director for the prosecutor’s office.

Evan Newman, 27, of St. Clair Shores, died at the scene, according to the release. Fraylick indicated in an email to the Free Press that Jones, of Roseville, was driving a Jeep Cherokee. No drugs or alcohol were involved. She stated Jones was not hurt.

Jones’ attorney, Vincent Toussaint, said Monday that he had no comment at that time.

Detroit Police Officer Justin Hearn, a spokesman, indicated in a text message to the Free Press that Hearn resigned in December.

Roseville police presented the case to the county prosecutor’s office Feb. 12, and charges were authorized the same day, according to the release.

“Police officers are sworn to uphold the law, but they are also bound by it. No one is above the law, and our justice system must apply equally to all,” Prosecutor Peter Lucido stated in his office’s release.

A probable cause conference is set for March 5.
