Aug. 15—An Ohkay Owingeh man was arrested north of Española on Sunday with an ammunition, several pounds of illegal drugs and an AR-15 style rifle with a serial number that had been tampered with, according to New Mexico State Police.
Isaac Cruz, 34, faces seven counts of drug possession, six counts of drug trafficking and one count of felon in possession of a firearm, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in Rio Arriba County Magistrate Court.
Cruz was arrested when a state police officer was responding to a call on County Road 40 in Alcalde and saw him sitting in his car parked on the road, according to the complaint. The officer recognized Cruz from previous interactions as someone with an active arrest warrant, he wrote.
A warrant was issued for Cruz’s arrest after he failed to appear to a court hearing for a gun possession charge in June, according to court records.
After searching Cruz’s vehicle, officers say they seized the rifle, firearm magazines, two packages of ammunition, two body armor vests and numerous drugs, including more than two pounds of heroin, almost 1,300 fentanyl pills, 1.26 ounces of fentanyl powder, almost a pound of cocaine and crack cocaine, 1.42 ounces of methamphetamine and various drug paraphernalia, state police wrote in a news release.
County Magistrate Judge Alexandra Naranjo on Monday set a secured bond of $250 for Cruz. He was still in jail Thursday.
