One dead after three-car collision on Garners Ferry Road in Richland County

One person is dead after a fatal collision involving three vehicles Thursday morning in Richland County, officials said.

The crash took place at 6:54 a.m. on Garners Ferry Road about four miles south of the city of Columbia, South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper William Bennett said in a press release.

A 2001 Ford Taurus hit a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup from behind when the Chevy had slowed down to make a u-turn at an intersection of McCords Ferry Road, the highway patrol said. Then, a 2021 Chevy Silverado hit the pickup that had been pushed into the westbound lane of Garners Ferry after being initially struck, Bennett said.

The driver of a S-10 pickup died at the scene, the highway patrol said. The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released.

The Ford Taurus only had the driver in the car, who was taken to the hospital, and the Chevy Silverado driver and passenger were taken to the hospital as well, Bennett said.

The collision remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
