One of the largest Sacramento real estate firms has a new name after 78 years. Why now?

For generations, the Lyon name has been emblazoned in red letters on “For Sale” signs in front of Northern California homes.

That distinctive look changes on Tuesday.

After 78 years of doing business in Sacramento and Northern California under the Lyon Real Estate brand, the brokerage is officially changing its name to Windermere Real Estate.

The new brand turns the page on a sex and drug scandal that tarnished the Lyon name several years ago. Family scion and former CEO Michael Lyon was convicted in 2018 for secretly filming sexual activities with prostitutes. That case occurred after a 2011 guilty plea to four counts of electronic eavesdropping and an agreement to pay millions of dollars in settlements to former nannies, baby sitters and family friends who claimed they were secretly recorded in the bedrooms and bathrooms of his homes.

Windermere acquired Lyon in 2021, although the Sacramento-based company did not immediately take on the new name.

With the deal, Lyon joined a family-owned behemoth and gained access to a much broader network of agents, marketing tools and other support.

Privately held Windermere is one of the nation’s largest real estate firms, with more than 300 offices and 7,000 agents across the western United States and Mexico. Windermere closed more than 47,000 home sales for more than $33 billion in volume.

Last year, Sacramento-based Lyon closed 3,191 transactions totaling $1.85 billion in sales volume. The firm employs more than 700 agents in 14 offices located throughout the Sacramento region.

“We’re thrilled to officially embrace the Windermere name,” Pat Shea, president & CEO of Lyon Real Estate said in a statement. “This rebrand represents an exciting new chapter in our commitment to enhancing our resources and capabilities while staying true to the trusted relationships and exceptional service our clients and communities have come to rely on.”

In addition to helping people sell, find and purchase new homes, the company noted, Lyon Real Estate has contributed more than $1.34 million to local nonprofits throughout the Sacramento region since 2015.
