Palestinian customs police officer killed in West Bank shooting

A Palestinian Authority customs police officer was killed during an Israeli military operation in the West Bank.

The incident happened as Israeli soldiers arrested two wanted Palestinians in the area of the village of Tubas in the north of the West Bank on Tuesday night, the military said on Wednesday.

The customs police officer was killed in an exchange of fire between the army and armed Palestinians.

According to Israel, there was an anti-terrorist operation in Tubas in which two men suspected of being involved in terrorist activities were being sought. During the operation, the soldiers came across armed men, and firearms were used. The policeman was hit in the process.

The army says one Israeli soldier was slightly injured, and that the incident is being investigated.

Another Palestinian was killed in clashes with Israel’s army in Kalandia near Ramallah on Tuesday night, the Ministry of Health said in Ramallah. The Israeli military says soldiers were in Kalandia to destroy the house of a Palestinian who had carried out an attack on a petrol station in the Israeli settlement of Eli in February, killing two people. Clashes broke out during the operation.

The situation in the West Bank has worsened significantly since the start of the Gaza war following the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. More than 560 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations, confrontations, or their own attacks in the West Bank, according to the Ministry of Health.

Violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians has also increased during this period.
