Paris Olympics 2024 LIVE! Peaty fastest; Dupont wins France gold; Alcaraz & Nadal through; Team GB medals

Paris Olympics LIVE!

The 2024 Olympics officially kicked off last night with a spectacular opening ceremony, and the action around Paris did not disappoint on the opening day of action at the Olympic Games.

The first medals were secured by Team GB, who took diving bronze through Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen and then won silver through Anna Henderson in the road cycling time trial. Josh Tarling could not follow them onto the podium, as he finished fourth after a puncture derailed his medal hopes, while Team GB’s men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team had to settle for fifth.

France won their first gold of the Games, thanks to Antoine Dupont’s heroics in the rugby sevens final, while Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal eased to victory in their opening doubles match. Adam Peaty was back in the pool, and he qualified fastest through to the 100m breaststroke final, which will take place tomorrow night.

Two medals for Great Britain on the first day, making it the most successful start to an Olympics in 44 years. That’ll do.

Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen took diving bronze to kick things off, in what was a dramatic start to the day.

Anna Henderson, meanwhile, recovered from a broken collarbone in April to ride to a shock silver medal in the road cycling time trial.

That’ll do it for the swimming on day one.

USA four metres up with 100m to go. That’s gold done, don’t worry about that.

Italy and Australia in the medal positions, Duncan Scott needs an engine.

Not going to happen for Team GB.

Gold for USA, Australia take silver and bronze for Italy. Britain in fifth.

Matt Richards, Jacob Henry, Tom Dean and Duncan Scott the British quartet. Two medals already for Team GB today – can they make it three?

Here we go.

Some start for China, not far off world record pace at 100m. USA right there too. Britain back in fifth or sixth.

Halfway stage… work to do for the Brits. USA have moved into the lead, ahead of Italy and China. Britain not out of the hunt for bronze.

Australia near enough a body length up with 100m to go. USA second, China in third and a second off the lead. There’s then a couple of miles to the rest of the field.

Charge to the finish, Australia have not disappointed. Dominant showing to take relay gold! USA snatch silver, just ahead of China.

An Olympic record for the Australians.

Time for the women’s 400m freestyle final – another Ariarne Titmus vs Katie Ledecky showdown.

A remarkable swim from Lukas Maertens of Germany, who goes out ridiculously hard in the men’s 400m freestyle final and just about clings on for gold.

Road cycling time trials

As media centre’s go, the Grand Palais in Paris isn’t a bad one.

It was built in 1900 using 6,000 tons of steel, it has had a facelift for the Games. It’s the central point for the women’s and men’s road cycling time trial.

Anna Henderson goes first for GB in this but is fourth last off the starting ramp. And Josh Tarling goes for the Brits in the men’s.

It’s still raining and the ground is very wet so there’ll inevitably be riders slipping off their bikes on the course.

Tennis – Habib 1-3* Alcaraz

It’s an ominous start for Habib, who is 3-0 down against Alcaraz and has already had to save three break points in the fourth game.

Crowd firmly behind Habib, trying to get him on the board in this match. Alcaraz not used to being the unpopular one.

Huge roar, as a big Habib forehand does him up and running!

Next thing to look out for is the road cycling time trials, made more difficult today by the rain over the last 24 hours.

So much of Britain’s Olympic success across the past two decades has come on two wheels, and there is hope for more of the same on the roads of Paris.

For the first time at the Games, men and women will compete over the same course and distance, starting and finishing by Pont Alexandre III.

Anna Henderson, last year’s European silver medalist, is up first in the women’s event, which starts at 1:30pm, but it is 20-year-old Josh Tarling who carries highest hopes of starting the medal rush in the men’s event (from 3.32pm), having won world gold last year.

Tennis

Rain has meant it’s been a slow start at Roland Garros, but Iga Swiatek got the job done under the roof.

The world number one has beaten Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2 7-5, safely through to the second round.

Fellow French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has just started his match against Hady Habib of Lebanon.

Whitlock: We can’t be happy yet

As we covered earlier, it was a strong showing from Team GB in men’s gymnastics qualifying, but Max Whitlock has warned there is still “a big job to do”.

“Everyone goes in feeling like they know when the pressure’s going to hit, where their specialist pieces are, and the tension builds when it gets to that, but when it hits, the feeling’s unbelievable.

“Finishing the way the boys did, I think we can all be very, very proud. But it’s only step one.

“I don’t think we can be happy, everyone ticked the boxes we needed to and everyone did their job amazingly, so we can use this to build confidence. We’ve still got a big job to do.”

Yasmin Harper, one half of Team GB’s bronze medal-winning diving duo from earlier this morning, has been speaking to the BBC: “We’re so excited, we are so pleased with ourselves. We came into this event knowing this is what we want and we had to stand on the boards and deliver and I’m so proud that we were able to do that this morning.”

The rain continues to fall here in Paris, which is not helping out in terms of the schedule. Play on all the outside courts reminds suspended in the tennis at Roland Garros, while the men’s skateboarding competition has been postponed until Monday because of unsafe conditions.

There’s a slight lull in the action for the moment but plenty more to come this afternoon, including in the form of the men’s and women’s cycling time trails.

Josh Tarling is the reigning European champion and represents Team GB’s best shot at a gold medal on the opening day of these Games.

That’s it for the first of three subdivisions in men’s gymnastics qualifying.

Britain finish top of the team standings on 256.561, a little more than three points ahead of the USA.

Jake Jarman and Joe Fraser sit first and second respectively in the all-around individual standings. Jarman is also top of the floor standings, while Max Whitlock is second on the pommel horse.

A reminder that we won’t know who has qualified for the finals until after the third subdivision later tonight, but Britain are very well placed. The top eight teams and eight individuals on each apparatus qualify for the final, as well as the top 24 in the all-around.

Brilliant from Harry Hepworth on rings. He’s got the whole British team up off their seats as he rounds off their final piece of apparatus with 14.700.

One or two teams are just finishing up their final routines and then we’ll run through the state of play.

Australia win the second heat of the men’s 4x100m free but it’s not as quick as the opener, so it’s China who go into tonight’s final ranked No1, albeit all of the teams will have options in terms of freshening up their quartets.

Britain are third-fastest and will go in believing they can sneak a medal.

Confirmation that Britain’s women qualify for tonight’s 4x100m freestyle final as seventh-fastest. Australia, missing one or two big names, are still through as the quickest quartet.

Tom Dean, the Olympic champion on the 200m free, has just brought Britain’s men’s home in second in their heat, which should be enough to qualify even with the second to come.

Teammate Joe Fraser leads the ovation as Max Whitlock nails his qualifying routine on pommel horse. We await the score… it’s 15.166, the second-best we’ve seen on the apparatus today.

Back to the gymnastics, where Britain are onto the pommel horse, meaning we’ll see Max Whitlock start his gold medal defence shortly.

They remain top of the team standings but the US have closed the gap. Jake Jarman remains top of the individual standings after four apparatus.
