Patients at U of L Health Peace Hospital injured staff members over the weekend during an altercation.

On Saturday at around 8:30 p.m., Louisville Metro Police responded to a 911 call at the psychiatric hospital off Newburg Road.

U of L Hospital spokesman David McArthur confirmed to The Courier Journal on Monday afternoon that "there was an incident involving some patients that did result in team member injuries."

McArthur did not clarify the extent of the injuries, how many patients were involved in the incident or how many staff members were injured, saying: "With the internal review underway, I do not have any additional information to share at this time."

A hospital employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said at least five youth patients attacked nurses and mental health techs, sending four to the hospital.

Although a 911 call was placed by a Peace Hospital employee, LMPD did not take an incident report. The department told The Courier Journal that nobody at the hospital wanted one taken.

The employee and another source with knowledge of the situation told The Courier Journal that once police arrived, they were not allowed into the hospital because they were carrying guns, which is against hospital policy. And Peace Hospital has no drop box for guns.

McArthur did not respond to the question of why police were not let inside.

"Although the situation was ultimately handled internally, we do appreciate the rapid response of LMPD," McArthur said in a statement. "Peace Hospital is actively investigating the incident."
