Peak fall foliage in the Southern Tier will be here sooner than you think

The fall season is on the rise which means peak fall foliage is too.

If you’re wondering when the best time is to witness the beautiful sea of red, orange and yellow across the Southern Tier, here’s what to know.

With some areas of New York already seeing a prominent change of color outside, the best is still yet to come.

When is peak foliage in the Southern Tier, NY?

According to the Smoky Mountains 2024 foliage prediction map, the leaves should be at their peak color across the Southern Tier by Monday, Oct. 14, but will be at partial colors to near-peak colors by the beginning of October.

So, while there is still plenty of time to see the leaves change colors, the window between peak and past-peak colors is short. According to the predictor map, past-peak colors begins in the Southern Tier by Monday, Oct. 21.

But, in the time between now and the foliage’s peak, the leaves will continue to change. The New York State website provides an in-depth look into the how the leaves change each week.

Foliage color change reports in New York

For the week of Wednesday, Sep. 25 to Tuesday, Oct. 1, New York’s Fall Foliage report predicts various changes across the Southern Tier.

  • In Broome County, the color reports show a 25% change in Binghamton, with leaves shifting to bright red and yellow colors.

  • In Chenango County, the report indicates a larger change than Broome, with a 45% shift with colors ranging from red and yellow to brown and orange.

  • In Chemung County, the report shows a slight change in Elmira, with a 20% shift to various colors.

  • In Delaware County, there is a much greater shift, according to the report, with a 65% change in Delhi and a 50% change in Colchester of a wide range of colors.

  • Steuben County shows a report of 40% change in the cities of Corning, Hammondsport and Hornell, with red, yellow and orange poking through.

  • Tioga County only shows a small 5% change, according to the report, with some orange and yellow showing in Owego.
