A plane crashed in the Midlands region of South Carolina Sunday, according to the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office.

Both occupants of the two-passenger plane were airlifted by helicopter to a hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Further information on their conditions was not available.

A spokesperson for the Saluda County coroner told The State that their office has not been asked to respond to either the crash site or hospital.

The plane crashed in the area between Persimmon Hill Golf Course and the Saluda County Airport, according to the release.

Information about the cause of the crash was not available, but the sheriff’s office said it’s being investigated by the FAA. There was no word if the National Transportation Safety Board was also investigating the crash.

Information about where and when the plane departed, as well as its intended destination, was not available.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, both EMS and the Saluda County Fire Service responded to the crash.

Minutes after the crash, firefighters were dispatched to an unrelated structure fire on the other side of the county, as hot temperatures and high humidity have caused conditions to be “a tinderbox,” according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
