Footage released by the Juneau Police Department shows the moment a woman wielding a hatchet was fatally shot by a police officer on December 25, in what was deemed to be a justified use of deadly force.
Officers arrived at the scene after responding to a report of a disturbance at a grocery store on Trout Street, the Juneau Police Department said.
In the video, the woman, Ashley Rae Johnston, is seen standing in a parking lot holding a hatchet.
Johnston begins walking toward an officer, who tells her to drop the hatchet. Johnston can be heard repeatedly shouting âshootâ at the officer.
The officers are seen using Taser, which doesnât stop Johnstonâs advance. Eventually, the officer shoots. Police said that Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.
