Police: CT man pointed airsoft gun at individual before barricading self in home

A man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly pointing what looked like a real rifle at someone before barricading himself inside his West Haven home, prompting a response from the local SWAT team.

Police responded to the 700 block of Washington Avenue just before 7:15 p.m. on the report of a threatening complaint involving a gun before learning that someone looking to rent an apartment was confronted by a rifle-wielding man, according to Sgt. Scott Allard of the West Haven Police Department.

Allard said the victim alleged that the man exited his front porch with the rifle and walked over to him before pointing the firearm at him. The armed man then allegedly told the victim to get out of there before returning to his porch.

When officers arrived in the area they saw a man who was later identified as 56-year-old Ceferino Diaz Jr., according to Allard. He was on his porch and retreated into the home, closing the door behind him.

Allard said officers made a number of attempts to get Diaz to come out of the home, but he refused. The West Haven SWAT team responded to the scene and found that the rifle Diaz had was left on the porch, according to Allard. The firearm turned out to be a airsoft gun that fires pellets.

Diaz was taken into custody hours later, Allard said. He appeared intoxicated and allegedly admitted to authorities that he had been drinking prior to the incident, according to Allard.

Diaz was taken into custody and transported to the West Haven Police Department. He faces charges of brandishing a facsimile firearm, first-degree threatening, second-degree reckless endangerment and breach of peace.

Diaz was held on bond pending an arraignment hearing Thursday in Milford Superior Court. According to online court records, a judge set his bond at $2,500 during the hearing.

Diaz did not enter a plea during the hearing and remains in custody. He is due back in court on Sept. 27.
