Police fatally shoot man in neighborhood east of Downtown Albuquerque

Aug. 17—Albuquerque police shot and killed a man during a standoff Saturday evening in a neighborhood near Downtown.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said the man was shot after “extensive attempts to negotiate.”

“The suspect died as a result of his wounds,” he said.

Gallegos said the standoff began sometime before 3:30 p.m., when officers tried to arrest an armed man near Arno and Lead SE.

He said the man holed up inside a home in the area and there were possibly shots fired at the man “during a foot pursuit prior to the suspect entering the property.”

“This is an active scene as officers are setting a perimeter and working to keep everyone safe while they attempt to negotiate with the suspect,” Gallegos said in an earlier release.
