POLICE NEWS: Buggy struck injuring two; truck’s driver arrested

Nov. 24—A woman and child were injured when the horse-drawn buggy they were in was struck by a pickup truck at Ind. 4 and C.R. 127 at 6:02 p.m. Saturday. The truck’s driver was allegedly intoxicated and jailed.

According to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, a 2022 GMC pickup truck driven by Daniel Beiler, 24, Gap, Pennsylvania, was westbound on Ind. 4 when hit struck the rear passenger side of a westbound buggy pulled by an 8-year-old Dutch harness. The buggy was driven by Joseph Schwartz, 34, Goshen. Inside the buggy were four passengers: 30-year-old Margaret Schwartz, who complained of chest pain; a 6-year-old boy who had a laceration above his eye; a 1-year-old girl; and an 8-year-old boy. Neither of the drivers reported injuries.

The two who were injured were taken to Goshen Hospital for treatment.

Beiler was reportedly intoxicated and was taken to the Elkhart County Jail on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

PURSUIT

A pursuit led to the arrested of a 34-year-old Elkhart man at 5:31 p.m. Saturday.

According to a report from Goshen police, officers made a traffic stop near Hammond Avenue and Yuma Avenue in Elkhart. After a brief investigation, a vehicle pursuit ensued. The driver was stopped and arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement in a motor vehicle, false informing and operating a vehicle without ever having obtained a license. There were also two outstanding warrants through Elkhart County he was held on.

The man was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

CRASH REPORT

A 23-year-old woman was injured in a crash at West Pike Street and North Indiana Avenue at 2:04 p.m. Friday. Goshen police said the woman was taken to Goshen Hospital for treatment.

ARRESTS

—A 28-year-old Goshen man was arrested by Goshen police at 10:13 p.m. Saturday on a charge of intimidation with a deadly weapon. He was accused by a 53-year-old man of intimidating him with a firearm and discharging it in the 1800 block of Windsor Lane. Police arrested the 28-year-old, who was then taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

—A 40-year-old New Paris man was arrested by Goshen police at South Main Street and College Avenue at 2:03 a.m. Sunday on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana with a prior offense and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

—A 30-year-old Goshen man was arrested in the 1800 block of Windsor Lane by Goshen police at 4:40 a.m. Sunday on Elkhart County warrants and on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender. He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

The 28-year-old was taken to Goshen Hospital for medical clearance. The 23-year-old was cited and released on a charge of battery. He also complained of pain but was not treated. A 20-year-old Elkhart woman was at the same time arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor.

—A 23-year-old South Bend man was arrested by Goshen police at 3:13 a.m. Saturday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of marijuana at West Pike Street and North Chicago Avenue. Police stopped a vehicle for a moving violation, and the driver was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

—Antique silverware sets were reported stolen at 9:15 a.m. Friday from an 80-year-old woman’s residence at Greencroft, according to a report from the Goshen Police Department.

—A 78-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 9:44 a.m. Friday that a statue was stolen from his property in the 1600 block of Clover Creek Lane.

—A 20-year-old Goshen man reported to Goshen police at 6:03 p.m. Friday that a package was stolen from his front porch in the 1300 block of Baker Avenue.

—Goshen police were called to shoplifting at Burlington, 4024 Elkhart Road, at 7:41 p.m. Friday. Two suspects left the store before police arrived.
