Dec. 27—ELKHART — A male suspect is in custody after reportedly fleeing from Elkhart Police Department officers in a stolen vehicle late last night/early this morning. He also reportedly barricaded himself in the vehicle when the pursuit ended on an off-ramp exit for the Indiana Toll Road.
According to Elkhart police, at 11:53 p.m. Thursday, an Elkhart police officer started to pursue a stolen van in the area of Cassopolis Street/East Bristol Street in Elkhart. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Wisconsin.
The van driver reportedly disregarded EPD vehicle emergency lights and sirens and continued to flee from the originating officer, as other EPD officers joined the pursuit. Shortly after midnight, the fleeing van entered the Indiana Toll road traveling east, the report reads.

The pursuit ended with the vehicle stopping at the Middlebury off-ramp exit 107 on the Toll Road at approximately 12:10 a.m., police reported. The subject reportedly barricaded himself inside the vehicle and refused to exit. Officers deployed chemical irritants inside the vehicle without success. The Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was activated to assist, and also deployed gas inside the vehicle with no success.
Police said that eventually SWAT extracted the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle from the van shortly before 5:30 a.m. with the assistance of a K9. The male suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, per protocol.
No other injuries were reported during this incident. Elkhart was assisted by Indiana State Police, the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office, the Middlebury Police Department, and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.
