Port Hope Township home suffers significant damage after fire

Jan. 6—BELTRAMI COUNTY — A Port Hope Township home has suffered significant damage after a fire broke out early Monday morning north of Bemidji.

According to a release from Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood, at 5:24 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire near South Bay Court, about 10 miles north of Bemidji in Port Hope Township.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-story residential structure with heavy fire from the attached garage extending into the attic space, the release said. Initial crews pulled a 2 1/2-inch attack line and began extinguishing efforts from the exterior.

As additional crews arrived, two 1 3/4-inch attack lines were stretched to the interior, extinguishing the fire.

A total of 31 firefighters and 11 pieces of equipment were on the scene for approximately four hours. The home and its contents suffered significant damage.

One minor firefighter injury has been reported, the release said. The fire is currently under investigation but appears to have been accidental.

The Bemidji Ambulance Service, Beltrami County Sherriff’s Office, Blackduck Fire Department, Beltrami Electric, and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted the Bemidji Fire Department at the scene.
