Portland’s strip club scene earns it a spot among WalletHub’s ‘most sinful’ cities

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A report on America’s “sinful cities” may have placed Portland among the most lustful metro areas, but residents can at least say they aren’t considered lazy.

WalletHub’s latest ranking evaluated the nation’s most populated cities based on seven categories: anger and hatred, jealousy, excesses and vices, greed, lust, vanity and laziness.

Out of 182 cities, Portland secured a spot as the 24th-most “sinful” city overall. With a score of 43.93 points out of 100, here is how the metro area ranked within each category.

  • Anger and hatred: No. 43

  • Jealousy: No. 37

  • Excesses and vices: No. 97

  • Greed: No. 22

  • Lust: No. 14

  • Vanity: No. 41

  • Laziness: No. 179

Portland’s placement at No. 24 is a few steps up — or down, depending on how you look at it — from its 2022 placement at No. 30.

Cracking down on Portland’s ‘tagger tourism’

The Rose City once again ranked highest in the “lust” category, which includes metrics on adult entertainment establishments per capita and Google searches for the online dating app “Tinder.”

This result can be accredited to Portland’s record as the U.S. destination with the most strip clubs per capita. The Oregon Historical Society estimates there is one strip club for every 11,826 residents. Earlier this year, local filmmaker Megan Alan even released a documentary about the city’s reputation as the “Strip Club Capital of America.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Portland ranked lowest in the “laziness” category. The category includes data on high school dropout rates, the share of adults who don’t exercise and the average number of hours people work each week.
