President Jimmy Carter’s D.C. funeral will be officiated by former Erie bishop

President Jimmy Carter’s funeral will be officiated by the Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe, formerly the leader of the Erie-based Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania.

Carter’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Washington National Cathedral in the nation’s capital. President Joe Biden has declared Thursday a National Day of Mourning.

The state funeral is not open to the public but can be viewed online via the cathedral’s website or a livestream on its YouTube channel.

Carter died Dec. 29 at his home in Plains, Georgia, at age 100. His casket was being taken Tuesday to the U.S. Capitol, where the 39th president was to lie in state until Thursday morning.

Rowe was elected presiding bishop and primate of the New York City-based Episcopal Church in June at the age of 49 and began his nine-year term on Nov. 1. He had been ordained bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania in 2007 and was previously rector of St. John’s Church in Franklin for seven years. From 2019 until his departure, he led a partnership between the Episcopal Dioceses of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Western New York.

In a statement on the Episcopal Church’s website, Rowe called Carter “a devoted peacemaker and steadfast public servant whose faithful labor for his country, his church, and the cause of global democracy and human rights has long been an inspiration to Christians across the world.”

More presidents and the cathedral

Washington National Cathedral has also hosted the state funerals for Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, according to a news release. President Woodrow Wilson was laid to rest inside the cathedral in 1924.
