Puppies found in trash; two still alive, five others dead

Aug. 2—TRAVERSE CITY — Two puppies were found alive in the trash along with five others that died, the Traverse City Police Department reported.

City workers made the discovery Wednesday after hearing the puppies. The police were called to the 700 block of 11th Street around 11 a.m.

Capt. Pete Simerson said officers searched the area and found a sign advertising puppies for sale. They called the number posted, which led them to a 23-year-old Chicago man who was living in his car nearby.

The man was arrested on suspicion of animal neglect and animal cruelty. They believe he had been selling the puppies and put them in the trash after some of them died, Simerson said.

Animal control has custody of the two puppies and a veterinary anthropologist will investigate the cause of death for the other five, the captain said.
