Food, music and art were the focus of the first Reading Roots Market.
The event Friday was presented by Downtown Reading, Penn Street Market and the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts.
Held on the grounds of the GoggleWorks, 201 Washington St., the market was conceived as a way of amplifying and bringing together the work the three entities were already doing individually, said Maritza Loaiza, Downtown Reading coordinator.
Part food market, arts and crafts fair and food festival, the event was intended to highlight businesses, restaurants and other assets downtown.
âGoggleWorks has great artists, great crafters and a great presence in the community,â Loaiza said. âAnd then with Downtown Reading, we just want to highlight everything that we have downtown, other great partners, all our great small businesses, restaurants.â
An additional component, she said, is the collaboration with Penn Street Market. The seasonal farmerâs market is held Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 600 block of Penn Street.
âBut not everyone can make it to the market during the morning hours or during the day,â Loaiza said. âSo by having an evening market, someone can get out of work and come out, get some produce, look at some artwork, listen to music, grab some great food and drinks and just have a great evening in downtown Reading.â
The event was also a chance to meet and chat with some of the GoggleWorksâ artists and buy some of their work.
Organizers came up with the name for the event because the presenting entities and participating artists and merchants are all rooted in the city.
The collaborators are planning future Reading Roots Market nights for Sept. 20 and Oct. 18 and hope to make it a regular seasonal event.
