Remains found in Black Canyon identified as missing Denver man

MONTROSE, Colo. (KREX) – The remains recently found in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park have been positively identified a Denver man who’s been missing since February.

The National Parks Service said the remains were recovered on Sunday and have been confirmed to be Jordan Marsters. On Feb 15, family members reported to the Denver Police Department that Marsters was missing.

He was linked to an abandoned vehicle at the Black Canyon which triggered an intensive search.

U.S. Park rangers conducted an operation over the weekend to recover Marsters’ remains which were found in a remote, highly technical area within the wilderness area of the Black Canyon.

NPS said several agencies helped with the search including:

  • Capitol Reef National Park recovery team

  • Canyonlands National Park recovery team

  • Colorado National Monument recovery team

  • Curecanti National Recreation Area overhead and recovery team

  • Montrose County Coroner’s Office

  • Montrose County Sheriff’s Office investigative unit

  • Montrose County Road and Bridge

  • Friends of Black Canyon Search and Rescue volunteers contingency team

  • Mountain Blade Runner Helicopters

“These agencies and the family have worked tirelessly to bring a resolution to this search and recovery of the remains,” NPS said in a news release.

The National Park Service originally found the remains last month. But due to where he was located, NPS had to reach out to nearby park workers who have extreme technical skill sets to aid with the recovery.
