RICHMOND, Ind. — Richmond police are investigating the city’s first homicide of the new year.
About 11:55 p.m. Friday, city officers found 39-year-old Douglas D. Jones in the 600 block of South P Street, “lying in the street, bleeding and unconscious,” according to a news release from the Richmond Police Department.
Jones was transported to Reid Hospital by Richmond Fire medics, and died there before he could be flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

“Initial evidence suggests Mr. Jones suffered a stab wound,” the release said.

Police investigators conducted a “thorough search” of a nearby home and interviewed witnesses.
“Preliminary findings indicate there was a physical encounter between Mr. Jones and the resident upon Mr. Jones’ arrival at the address,” according to the release.
Police had been sent to the scene after emergency dispatchers received a report of an “unwanted person” at that address.
