Royal family news latest: King Charles gives unexpected health update as Queen statue sparks flurry of debate

King Charles has given a rare update on his health while meeting with New Zealand’s female rugby team at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

The monarch, 76, who announced that he had been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer in February, expressed his regret that he would be unable to visit New Zealand too when he travels to Australia and Samoa next month.

The “subtle adjustments” were made so the monarch has time to rest during the five-day tour. Charles told the team: “I am extremely sorry I can’t come to New Zealand in later October because of doctor’s orders. But I hope there will be another excuse before too long.”

The monarch then encouraged the team to “make the most” of the opportunity, “as you don’t stay young for very long, as I discovered,” the Express reports.

This comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding a new statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which critics have demanded be “melted down”.

Unveiled at Antrim Castle Gardens in Northern Ireland on Friday (6 September), the bronze artwork has been mocked by many for seemingly failing to resemble the late monarch.

The statue has since been defended by the council, who said it shows the queen “in a dignified pose, reflecting her grace, steadfastness and lifelong dedication to public service.”

Prince Harry ‘is not even the spare to his wife’, biographer claims

11:00 , Emma Guinness

A royal biographer has claimed that the Duke of Sussex “is not even the spare to his wife” after analysing the couple’s recent quasi-royal tours of Colombia and Nigeria.

Harry, who turns 40 this weekend, famously penned a 2023 memoir about his status as the “spare” in the royal family.

As reported by the Sun, biographer Angela Levin said: “You could say Harry is not even the spare to his wife. He’s almost nothing.

“She [Meghan] treats him horrendously. If you look at the filming of them in Colombia and Africa, he is not asked anything. He’s pushed out of the way.”

“I mean, we all know that when Meghan and Harry gave the interview on Oprah, which is infamous.

“Although they didn’t plan this, by the time the interview aired, Prince Philip was in hospital. We know that he died shortly afterwards.

“We also know that the interview was like exploding a nuclear weapon in the courtyard of Buckingham Palace.

“What is remembered is that the Queen’s comments. ‘Some recollections may vary’ sums it up very well. But that was absolutely tasteless place to be seen.

“We know that Meghan and Oprah are friends, but to be seen in a place which brought back memories of that interview on that anniversary is just extraordinary.”

“That’s clearly the image that that William and Kate are trying to present, and I think they’re doing it quite successfully.”

‘Out of darkness, can come light’: Kate’s full statement

Tuesday 10 September 2024 06:00 , Athena Stavrou

“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment.

The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.

The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.

With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.

This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.

Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.

I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.

Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.

William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling.

To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.”

Kate’s personal video shows ‘vulnerability while staying in control’

Tuesday 10 September 2024 04:00 , Athena Stavrou

The Princess of Wales’s deeply personal video is a “groundbreaking moment” and “tectonic shift” in how the royal family controls its image, a PR guru has said.

Public relations and crisis consultant Mark Borkowski said the “polished” footage, featuring precious family moments and Kate sharing a health update in a voiceover, sets a new precedent, showing vulnerability while staying in command.

“This is film for the YouTube Insta generation – deeply personal yet controlled to convey a family dealing with cancer. A happy family portrait,” he said.

Mr Borkowski added: “It’s groundbreaking, an absolute first – a tectonic shift in how the royal family controls its image.

“Kate’s journey is profound and deeply personal, but they’ve learned that emotion can be controlled – and weaponised – in small, potent doses.

“By doing this through a polished film, they maintain dignity and control while still appearing relatable.”

Voices: As a cancer survivor, this is what I want the Princess of Wales to know

If I could write a letter to Kate Middleton after watching her powerful video about finishing her chemotherapy treatment, this is what I’d want to her to know: that her cancer message is moving, powerful, important and timely.

Watching the poignant footage made me cry. Seeing the Princess of Wales and her precious family enjoy the beautiful North Norfolk woods and beaches that I also love moved me deeply. And her carefully chosen words echo very many of my own feelings about having cancer.

As Kate Middleton releases an emotional video updating the nation on her health, Leah Hardy writes about why it means so much to her:

King Charles ‘losing patience’ over Prince Andrew’s living arrangements at Royal Lodge

Monday 9 September 2024 23:00 , Athena Stavrou

King Charles is “losing patience” with Prince Andrew after making several attempts to make him leave Royal Lodge.

The now disgraced Duke of York, 64, has occupied the 30-room mansion on the Windsor estate with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson since 2003 after being gifted a 75-year lease on the property for a reported notional rent of £260,000 a year by the late Queen Elizabeth II, with the added stipulation that he maintains the property.

Following the duke’s public fall from grace due to his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, the monarch wants him to move to a smaller, “more appropriate” home, but the duke is said to have consistently refused to leave.

A source told The Times that the monarch plans to privately rent out Royal Lodge for an estimated sum of £1m a year.

The property is reported to be in dire need of repairs Andrew has failed to carry out. “It is now two years into the King’s reign, and he wants the matter settled,” an insider stressed to the newspaper.

“It can be done tidily or untidily. It can be done with grace and dignity or it can be forced upon him. It’s all rather sad.

“But as things stand, life at Royal Lodge is set to become increasingly cold and uncomfortable for the duke. The only question now is when he will realise that he has become a prisoner of his own pride.”

Family moments captured on film as Kate shares cancer journey update

Monday 9 September 2024 17:57 , Athena Stavrou

Moments of the Princess of Wales’s family life, from snuggling with the Prince of Wales to spending precious time with her children, feature in footage released by Kate as she opened up about her cancer journey.

The montage, by filmmaker Will Warr, captures the princess enjoying the summer sunshine in the Norfolk woods with William and Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Embraces between the princess and her husband appear throughout, with a message from Kate played as a voiceover against a backdrop of gentle music.

Kate is shown cuddling into William, with her head on his shoulders as he holds and pats her hand, as they sit on a picnic blanket in the forest.

The family is seen happily, and competitively, playing cards around a table with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton.

There are hugs for Charlotte and a cuddle and kiss on the head for George from Kate, and Louis is shown embracing his father William.

Daredevil Louis climbs high in a tree, watched by Kate at the bottom, and William uses a playing card to remove a green caterpillar from Charlotte’s hair, showing it to her which makes her squeal.

In another clip, George peers into the camera and asks: “Is this filming?” and Charlotte and Louis press their faces near the lens giggling and both saying “Hello”.
