Search underway for 26-year-old missing climber on Mount Hood

Search and rescue teams were looking for a missing climber on Mount Hood on Friday, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

The 26-year-old man, from Washington, started the climb from Timberline Lodge on Thursday with a friend and reached the summit of Oregon’s tallest mountain. On the descent, the two became separated amid foggy weather conditions, police said.

Dispatch was notified about the missing man at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

“The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team was immediately activated to help locate the missing climber. Searchers from Portland Mountain Rescue worked late into Thursday night to try to locate the man, following leads based on cellphone signals,” a news release said.

Additional teams, including Clackamas Search and Rescue volunteers, Mountain Wave SAR, PNW Search & Rescue, and Hood River Crag Rats, joined the mission Friday morning.

Air support was also deployed from the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office and the Air National Guard with coordination from Oregon Emergency Management, officials said.
