Second earthquake in 5 days rocks West Texas with a 4.8 magnitude

A second earthquake rocked West Texas this week. This time, it was a 4.8-magnitude earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Scurry County was rocked again Friday morning by a reported 4.8-magnitude earthquake.

The 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck 14 kilometers (8.699 miles) northeast of Hermleigh, Texas, at a depth of 1.79 km, around 9:29 a.m., leading citizens to report tremors from all over West Texas. A second reported earthquake of 3.8 magnitude struck the same area at 9:40 a.m.

Most of the reports emanated from the larger communities in the region, according to the USGS, including Lubbock, Midland, Big Spring, San Angelo and Abilene.

No damage has been reported, with the USGS damage prediction being little damage to facilities.

West Texas is not unfamiliar with moderate earthquakes, although most produce little to no confirmed damage. The last one was a 4.9 magnitude earthquake on Monday night in Scurry County.
