Sleep in Heavenly Peace Monroe chapter delivers 100 beds to kids in need

MONROE — In less than six months, the Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) chapter in Monroe has delivered 100 beds to youth in need.

Their motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!”

SHP Monroe is part of a national nonprofit organization started in 2012 with the main goal to build beds to distribute into the community to children that do not have a bed.

“With supporters including Lowe’s Home Improvement, Michigan Gas Utilities, 100 Women Who Care – Monroe, Knights of Columbus, DTE and 2|42 Community Church, along with countless individual donors who provided pillows and bedding, we were able to begin to close this gap and provide these beds at a pace that far exceeded our expectations,” Tim Taylor, Monroe chapter president, said in an email.

Taylor says he knew the need for beds in the community was present.

In May, Taylor and a group of 65 volunteers met from 8 a.m. to noon on a Saturday at the 2|42 Community Church Monroe Campus on Telegraph Road to build beds. Their build goal was 50 beds.

“The extent of the widespread need was unexpected and truly heart breaking,” he said. “As our list of applicants grew, the arms of Monroe’s charitable community began to meet this need with support to build and deliver these beds.”

“For 2025, we have partnered with the Newport Fire Fighters Association and North Monroe Street Church to start indoor building events beginning in January with a goal of being able to build and provide 250 beds to Monroe County children by the year’s end,” Taylor said.

To reach the goal, SHP will need community support and sponsors including volunteers for bed builds and delivery days.
