Aug. 4—SFCC services unavailable before 11 a.m. Thursday

Regular Santa Fe Community College services — including reception, academic advising, registration assistance and the cashier’s office — will be unavailable Thursday until 11 a.m. as college staff attend a convocation employee meeting. Normal services will resume after 11 a.m. via email, phone, online and in-person.

The William C. Witter Fitness Education Center will be closed until noon Thursday, and SFCC’s child care center, Kids Campus, will be closed all week for professional development.

SFCC to host free English as a Second Language classes

Santa Fe Community College will host free, 14-week English as a Second Language courses from Aug. 19 through November 21 to any adult who wants to learn English.

Classes will take place in-person at SFCC’s main campus, at Sweeney Elementary School and online.

Required orientation and registration sessions will take place at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Aug. 12, 13 and 14. Orientations will be capped at 30 students, and only future students may be present.

Davis New Mexico Scholarship partners with Common Application

The Davis New Mexico Scholarship, which supports first-generation, New Mexico students headed to college, has partnered with the Common Application, an application platform used by more than 1,100 colleges and universities across the U.S.

This year, the scholarship application, which opened Monday, will be available via the Common App platform.

“Transitioning our application to the Common App will dramatically increase college access for students across New Mexico,” Sam Ritter, director of the Davis New Mexico Scholarship, said in a news release announcing the change. “It will streamline the process for students and make life easier for school counselors.”

New Mexico Gas Company announces 20 scholarship winners

The New Mexico Gas Company in July awarded scholarships to 20 Indigenous students. Each winner receives $3,000 for education-related expenses for a certificate, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or graduate degree.

“We’re proud to support Native American students who are striving to make a difference in their communities,” New Mexico Gas Company President Ryan Shell said in a news release announcing the winners.

Local winners include:

* Maria Begay, Navajo Nation, attending Arizona State University for architectural studies

* Kiefer Garcia, Santo Domingo Pueblo, attending New Mexico State University to study biology

* Helena Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo, attending Colorado State University for a doctorate in veterinary medicine

* Hayle Trujillo, Nambé Pueblo, attending the University of Arizona to study microbiology
