Oct. 27—NMSU approves new president’s contract
Former provost of the University of Cincinnati Valerio Ferme is set to be the new president of New Mexico State University, following a unanimous vote by the university’s board of regents.
Ferme’s term will start on Nov. 18, when he will start a transitional period lasting until the end of the year. Interim President Mónica Torres will continue to serve as acting president until Ferme’s transition is complete.
“My family and I are honored to join the land-grant institution of the state of New Mexico, even as I am humbled by the responsibility that this role entails toward our campuses and communities and, equally importantly, to the citizenry and government of the state,” Ferme said in a message to the campus community.”
Ferme’s contract is set to last until Jan. 1, 2030.
Two Ramirez Elementary teachers honored at assembly
Two teachers from Ramirez Thomas Elementary School were celebrated in a schoolwide assembly on Oct. 21.
Maria Teresa Ramirez, a kindergarten educational assistant, was honored with the Outstanding Educational Support Professional of the Quarter award. Ann Reuland, a special education teacher, was honored with the Outstanding Teacher of the Quarter award. Santa Fe Public Schools Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez and National Education Association of Santa Fe union President Alan Cartier presented the two with plaques and gift cards.
“Ann’s passion for special education and her ability to connect with students on a personal level truly set her apart,” said Principal Charlotte Ault. “She inspires her students and her peers alike.
“Teresa is a true gem of our school,” she continued. “Her warmth, reliability, and dedication to ensuring our youngest learners feel supported make her an invaluable part of our community.”
Kearny Elementary teacher receives grant
Kearny Elementary School teacher Flor Barraza has been awarded a $2,500 grant to support a project to develop a school store stocked with educational supplies.
Students will be awarded “Kearny Bucks” from their teachers to purchase the supplies, which will also help build the students’ financial literacy skills.
The money is part of the enrichED Classroom Grant from the U.S. Eagle Federal Credit Union and its ARNIA Foundation to support New Mexico public and charter schools.
NMSU Global Campus launches new AI course for beginners
New Mexico State University Global Campus has announced the launch of a new “micro-learning” course for beginners to explore different usages of artificial intelligence, offering professionals the “unique opportunity to to future-proof their careers and gain essential knowledge about AI’s role in the workplace, society and innovation.”
The course will provide learners with an understanding of AI’s history, deep dives into how AI works and discussions on the ethics of AI. All those interested are welcome to enroll for the self-paced, eight-week online course for $300, but will get a $200 discount for a limited time using code XP27CT.
