Snow, wintry mix could impact Louisville this weekend. What to know

The first significant snow of 2025 could fall in Louisville Sunday afternoon or later, but forecasters with the National Weather Service cannot confirm how much will accumulate in the region.

The weather service has growing confidence that a winter storm system will form in the central U.S. this weekend and arrive in Louisville later. NWS Meteorologist Ryan Sharp said the precipitation Louisville could receive may be snow or a wintry mix.

“It does look like we’ll turn colder for a while now, and it should stay that way ahead of this system,” Sharp said. “So you’ll get temperatures back in the 20s and 30s, and if you get any kind of storm system cutting through with that, you’re going to have some wintry potential.”

According to a report released by the service Monday, “significant winter precipitation appears likely” within the storm’s path, but Sharp said it was hard to tell which part of the country would get the heaviest effects.

“So right now, what we need to do is make some alternate plans just in case, especially if you’re traveling,” Sharp said. “So maybe it’s something to consider. Be ready for it.”

There’s also a chance of snow flurries or even light snow in southern Indiana and north central Kentucky, but Sharp said the quick-moving system should be more in line with the light snows Louisville saw earlier this year.

More cold, Canadian air will make its way to Louisville in the middle of the week, making temperatures seem more winter-like.
