Dec. 20—State police arrested a Cordova man Thursday who has escaped arrest several times on a long list of charges — including vehicular homicide.
Officers arrested Daniel Patricio Romero, 43, during a tactical operation at a house in Velarde, according to a news release from the agency. Officers had previously “gathered intelligence” on the whereabouts of Romero, who has been known by the nickname “Oso,” New Mexico State Police wrote.
Romero “exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident,” police wrote. He was booked into Rio Arriba County jail in Tierra Amarilla.

Romero has evaded law enforcement several times in recent months, according to police affidavits filed against him. Officers say he drove away from state police who attempted an arrest operation at a house near Picuris Pueblo on N.M. 75 in early November, later abandoning his car on the side of the highway. Weeks beforehand, Romero had fired at Española police officers while leading them on a 110 mph chase out of the city on N.M. 76, according to another affidavit.
Romero faces a slew of felony counts, including homicide by vehicle, tampering with evidence, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, larceny, aggravated assault upon a police officer, shooting at or from a motor vehicle and at least five counts of drug possession.
Police allege Romero was responsible for a 2021 hit-and-run crash that killed road worker Mario Armando Rascon-Estrada, who was struck while he was working in an orange safety vest on the side of El Llano Road in Española. Española police filed the charge after reviving an investigation into Rascon-Estrada’s death in 2023 and matching Romero with DNA evidence taken from inside a pickup truck that was left at the scene.
