Stocks Lose Steam as Dow Turns Lower. Holding On Is Still a Struggle.

The stock market’s Monday gains slipped as Wall Street continued an end-of-year trend of selling into market pops.

The Dow was down 53 points, or 0.1% after rising nearly 250 points earlier in the afternoon. The S&P 500 was up 0.5%. The Nasdaq Composite was up 1%.

Market breadth has deteriorated through the afternoon. Only 245 S&P 500 stocks are set to close higher. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF was up less than 0.1%.
