Tropical Storm Ernesto is headed toward Bermuda and could strengthen to a major hurricane by the end of the week.
As of Wednesday morning the storm is north of Puerto Rico with maximum wind speeds of 70 mph. The National Hurricane Center’s latest forecast show it is expected to become a category 1 hurricane by the afternoon and could reach category 3 strength by Friday.
Schools and offices shuttered Wednesday morning in Puerto Rico as Ernesto’s rains hit the island. Authorities there are expecting power outages and heavy rainfall.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a 90% chance of an above-normal number of storms by the time the hurricane season concludes in November. Part of the reason for that above-normal activity includes near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic.
