Suspected serial bank robber ‘Derby Desperado’ arrested in North Texas, FBI says

The suspected serial bank robber known as the “Derby Desperado” was apprehended in North Texas on Monday, according to the FBI.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Justin Lee Chambers, was taken into custody around 10 a.m. in Grapevine for his alleged involvement in the July 12 robbery at the Capital One Bank in Dallas.

The arrest was a coordinated effort by the FBI Dallas Division’s Violent Crime Task Force and the Dallas Police Department.

The arrest comes after weeks of intense investigation and public appeals for information. The FBI’s Dallas Division had sought the public’s assistance in identifying the Derby Desperado, who was believed to be responsible for two high-profile bank robberies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area earlier this month.

The first robbery occurred on July 3, around 1:30 p.m. at the Texans Credit Union located at 7220 Telecom Parkway in Garland. The robber walked to the counter while speaking loudly on a mobile phone and presented a demand note to the teller, the FBI said. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, he exited the bank and fled in a dark SUV.

The second robbery took place on July 12, at the Capital One Bank at 2903 Forest Lane in Dallas, around 1:45 p.m. Using the same tactic, Chambers presented a demand note and once again left the premises in a dark SUV, the FBI said.

During both robberies, the man wore a light fedora-style hat with a dark band, leading investigators to come up with the nickname.

With Chambers now in custody, authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if he is linked to any additional crimes.
