SUV driver dies after fiery crash at Warwick traffic circle. What we know.

WARWICK – A 43-year-old man was fatally injured early Saturday morning when a small SUV crashed and caught fire, according to the Warwick police.

The crash took place after the Nissan Rogue with a Tennessee plate strayed from a travel lane on Centerville Road Extension near the Centerville Road rotary, Warwick police Capt. Charles A. Boisseau said in a news release.

The SUV crossed two lanes of traffic, jumped a curb at the rotary and hit a stone wall in the center of the circle, the news release said. There were no signs of braking, and speed appears to have been a factor, police said.

Police officers went to the scene at 12:02 a.m. and tried to extinguish the blaze and rescue the unconscious operator, the Nissan’s only occupant, but they could not immediately get him out, Boisseau said.

Afterward, Warwick Fire Department personnel extinguished the fire and extricated the man, Christopher Armstrong, said Boisseau.

Later Saturday, he was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Investigators urge anyone who saw it to call them at 401-468-4200 or contact them anonymously on the WARWICKPD app.
