SWAT standoff in Chula Vista prompts calls to evacuate, shelter in place

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A SWAT standoff is underway on Friday after a man barricaded himself in a home in Chula Vista, police said.

Authorities received a call around 12:30 p.m. about a welfare check in the 500 block of D Street, the Chula Vista Police Department said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, at 5:06 p.m. That call turned into a man firing a weapon into the ground and then out a window, police said.

No one was believed to be targeted or struck by the gunshots.

The suspect, described as a white man, early 40s, with brown hair, shirtless and wearing blue shorts, is believed to be the only person in the home at this time.

Around 4:10 p.m., SkyFOX/KUSI in the Sky was over the location where a large police presence could be seen, including a SWAT vehicle.

Police urge residents between 520 and 522 D Street to shelter in place, while others near the scene have been contacted by officers and asked to evacuate.

Those traveling in the area should use alternate routes if possible, according to police.

“Nearby residents monitor emergency notices sent to mobile devices/reverse 911 calls,” CVPD said.
