Teen indicted on murder charge in March shooting death at SE Gainesville apartment complex

A grand jury on Wednesday handed up an indictment against a 19-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a man in March at a southeast Gainesville apartment complex.

According to a news release from the State Attorney’s Office for the Eighth Judicial Circuit, Terrell Nichols Weeks, who was 18 at the time of the alleged offenses, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent. He is being held without bail at the Alachua County Jail.

According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, deputies responded to the Eastwood Meadows Apartments at 918 SE 44th St. on March 4 in reference to a “person shot call.”

Deputies arrived on scene and discovered a man, later identified as Tyren Certain, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He was transported by Alachua County Fire Rescue to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he died.

As previously reported in The Sun, deputies were told that the suspect ran north through the complex, where he dropped a gray sweatshirt. He then forced himself into an occupied vehicle before being told to leave.

The people inside the vehicle identified the man as Terrell Weeks, and told deputies that they knew him personally, the report says. They said Weeks told them that someone was shooting and that he needed them to drive him home. They refused.

The witnesses told deputies that Weeks had blood on his left arm and face when he attempted to enter their vehicle.

Deputies managed to locate Weeks at a nearby apartment. After several announcements, Weeks exited the building and was taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning.

During the interview, Weeks denied having any involvement with the shooting, the report said. He said he was standing in the area of the complex’s north entrance when he heard gunshots.
