Tehran condemns attack on Iranian consulate in Syria’s Aleppo

Tehran on Saturday strongly condemned an attack on the Iranian consulate general in Aleppo after a rebel alliance captured parts of the Syrian city.

“We will take legal action against this act of terror,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai.

The consul general and his staff were not injured in the attack and are doing well, the spokesman said, as reported on the ministry’s website.

Iran, Syria’s most important ally after Russia, has significantly expanded its military influence in recent years, establishing a land corridor through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon. Syria remains a critical part of Iran’s Middle East strategy.

According to the ISNA news agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Damascus on Sunday to discuss the situation in Aleppo with his Syrian counterpart.

He will then travel to Ankara, where the ongoing Syrian civil war will also be on the agenda.
