Tesla driver crashes near Sunshine Skyway Bridge, ends up launched into Gulf of Mexico

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A St. Petersburg man was seriously injured after crashing his car on I-275 Wednesday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol said at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Tesla sedan was driving at a high speed toward the Sunshine Skyway Bridge when the driver lost control.

The Tesla left the roadway, hit a drainage pond, and flipped into the mangroves.

According to troopers, the 25-year-old driver, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, ended up getting thrown from the Tesla and into the Gulf of Mexico.

However, a passing boater pulled him out of the water and took him to the Maximo boat ramp.

He was taken to a hospital for serious injuries.
