A Texas man is facing capital murder charges after police say he gave his 4-month-old son gasoline to drink.

Edgar James Bridgemon, 24, was arrested over the weekend and charged with attempted capital murder and evading arrest.

Just before noon on Saturday, Aug. 10, emergency medics requested law enforcement’s assistance at a home in the 1300 block of Pine Bluff Street.

“Bridgemon admitted to having given the infant gasoline to drink with the intention of ending the child’s life,” said police.

Following the confession, Bridgemon attempted to flee the scene on foot before being arrested about a block away, according to local news reports. He has been booked into the Lamar County Jail and is being held on a $255,000 bond.

The infant was taken to a local hospital by Paris medics and has been transferred to another facility in the Dallas area for further care. The child’s condition remained unknown as of Tuesday morning.
